Politics & Society
Reflections on the change of societies and political dynamics due to digitization are at the core of the re:publica programme. We are interested in shifting power balances, in societal change and civic digital action. At re:publica we want to talk about what we need to do for a free and open Internet and its relation to the shifting political paradigms on the continent. We want to explore the intersections of technology with politics and society.
In this track we will discuss surveillance technologies, data and privacy protection, e-privacy, Internet shutdowns and net neutrality. We will look at community networks, the effects of AI on society, digital disobedience, as well as new governance models aided by digital technologies.
We invite activists, civil society representatives, researchers and all persons with experience in these topics to help us examine the interplay of technology and society on a philosophical level as well as on the day-to-day basis. We’ll explore the opportunities of civic tech and debate the state of Internet freedom - based on your contributions. Questions we would like to see tackled e.g. include: How do social media platforms influence the shaping of political opinions? How are movements and communities for Internet freedom, digital democracy and open data developing? What social and legislative processes should be initiated to regulate an ever accelerating automation? Can the blockchain deliver on its promise of revolutionizing governance processes?

Rajesh Laghari's intervention presents the development of La Renta—a universal income built on a dynamic ecosystem of three private and a collective account, and granted in a dedicated cryptocurrency—and discusses results from the pilot project.

The SCS will rate online and offline behavior to create a score for each user. One SCS is planned to become mandatory in 2020. Functioning on gamification, these systems combine powerful tools to influence its users.
The lecture will review the current state of governmental and private SCS, the ideological background, the power of (big) data, cybernetics and gamification in- and outside of China. - Politics & Society-Algorithms make decisions affecting us in ways ranging from what we see on social media to how we are targeted by advertisers and law enforcement. Badly designed algorithms using biased or flawed datasets can violate people’s rights. Given such power, there is a critical need to build consensus around standards for algorithm creation and use to ensure they are accountable to the public interest. This workshop will brainstorm best practices for algorithmic transparency by internet companies.

Im konkreten Fall geht es um eine Journalistin, die das ZDF verklagt.

But whether the management of public (digital) infrastructure can benefit from it, is still an open question. Looking at it from the viewpoints of self-sovereign digital identity and free knowledge, we will talk about what blockchain-based tokens can and cannot do, which problems they solve and which they merely shift around or substitute with other, possibly even bigger problems.

Away from lifestyle blogs, what is therefore the role of social/political bloggers – to provide analysis of the issues of our day, to offer an alternative voice or to remain independent/credible at all costs?

Ein wichtiger Aspekt jeder Gemeinschaft und jeder lebendigen Kultur ist der Umgang mit dem Tod. Erinnern wir uns an diejenigen, die wir verloren haben? Es wird Zeit, uns darum zu kümmern, diesen Teil des Lebens auch in unsere vornehmlich digitalen Kultur zu integrieren.

Und welchen Zukunftsraum stellen wir Kindern zur Verfügung? Der Workshop vernetzt Engagierte und Interessierte in einem Ideenraum zur Stärkung der Rechte und Teilhabe von Kindern im Netz.
