Politics & Society
Reflections on the change of societies and political dynamics due to digitization are at the core of the re:publica programme. We are interested in shifting power balances, in societal change and civic digital action. At re:publica we want to talk about what we need to do for a free and open Internet and its relation to the shifting political paradigms on the continent. We want to explore the intersections of technology with politics and society.
In this track we will discuss surveillance technologies, data and privacy protection, e-privacy, Internet shutdowns and net neutrality. We will look at community networks, the effects of AI on society, digital disobedience, as well as new governance models aided by digital technologies.
We invite activists, civil society representatives, researchers and all persons with experience in these topics to help us examine the interplay of technology and society on a philosophical level as well as on the day-to-day basis. We’ll explore the opportunities of civic tech and debate the state of Internet freedom - based on your contributions. Questions we would like to see tackled e.g. include: How do social media platforms influence the shaping of political opinions? How are movements and communities for Internet freedom, digital democracy and open data developing? What social and legislative processes should be initiated to regulate an ever accelerating automation? Can the blockchain deliver on its promise of revolutionizing governance processes?
- Politics & Society-This workshop looks at the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) through a focus on citizenship. The GDPR has been talked to pieces by decision makers, businesses and lawyers, but where have the citizens been? Through the workshop we will work on strategies for encouraging citizen participation during the enactment of the GDPR.
- Politics & Society-The Open Movement has strong players like Wikimedia, Creative Commons, and Mozilla. We share a similar mindset, attend the same events and advocate for an “open by default” world. In 2017, we started a conversation around three questions: How do we make the open internet revolution irresistible? How do we build the community of the open? And how, as activists of the free and open web, do we talk to non-technologists about our world? We’d like to continue this discussion at rp18 – with you!

Eine digitale Lösung: Das Cochlea-Implantat. Meine Implantation war ein Übertritt von einer Blase in die andere. Und beim Wechsel von Perspektiven und Identität begegnete mir ein Konflikt, der in der Öffentlichkeit kaum wahrgenommen wurde, aber geradezu exemplarisch für die Digitalisierung ist.

Lösungen für Probleme algorithmischer Entscheidungsfindung für komplexe und neue Fälle sind teils bei uns bereits Gesetz - nur droht die Implementierung zu scheitern. Kybernetische Gesellschaftsmodelle können realisiert werden - doch ihre konstruktiven Prämissen sind längst gefallen. Das Gute ist: Lösungen liegen auf der Hand und werden hier vorgestellt.

Vier Monate nach dem Inkrafttreten ist es Zeit für eine erste Bestandsaufnahme: Hat das Gesetz den angestrebten Zweck erreicht und zu einer Reduzierung der Hass-Kommentare bei Facebook & Co. geführt? Oder liegen die Kritiker richtig, die durch das Gesetz eine erhebliche Einschränkung der Meinungsfreiheit befürchten? Und was wird auf europäischer Ebene geplant?

Ein Frosch vereint die zerstrittene neue Rechte. Ein Hashtag wird retweeted und schafft eine weltweite Plattform um über das Erleben von sexueller Gewalt und Sexismus zu schreiben. Memes sind in dem derzeitigen übersättigten Social-Media Umfeld der schnellste und effizienteste Weg um eine Idee zu verbreiten. Eignet sich diese hochemotionale Kommunikationsform um differenzierte feministische Ideen in einen online Diskurs einzubringen? Nach einer kurzen Definition des Meme Begriffs werde ich anhand der Analyse von #metoo die Möglichkeiten, Grenzen und Notwendigkeit feministische Memes im Netzdiskurs diskutieren.
- Politics & Society-Consent ist das letzte Tabu - und darüber zu reden, was passiert, wenn unsere intimsten Grenzen übertreten werden, noch immer eines schwierigsten Unterfangen überhaupt. Wir alle sind (pop-)kulturell mit Victim Blaming, Slut Shaming und Täterschutz sozialisiert. Warum es so wichtig ist, diese Denkmuster zu durchbrechen, erklären zwei Frauen, die in der digitalen Öffentlichkeit stehen und beschlossen haben, diesem Schweigen ein Ende zu machen.

Fake news and misleading headlines flourished through this, and continues to contribute to an ever growing problem of misinformation online.
- Politics & Society-After much hype about the liberating potential of social media, we now have serious doubts. In 2016 reportedly 18 elections were affected by online manipulations. Far too little is still known about social media's impact on democracy and elections in particular. We need to be more co-ordinated and more skilled in monitoring social media. And: we should not lose sight of the upside. The internet does provide space for free expression. How can we better full-fill this potential and build tools for participation and constructive communication?
