Fe:male Digital Footprint
Diversity and inclusion are fundamental elements of our value set. We’ve already achieved a lot, but there’s still so much more to do. We asked female techmakers, digital pioneers and coders out there: Is it time for us to enlarge the “Fe:male Digital Footprint”? What projects are currently in the works? At which interfaces are boundaries being shifted?
Fe:male Empowerment
The male, somewhat less social, genius is a well-known archetype throughout the history of computers – it’s a well-known cliché that continues to persist. Indeed, if digital historiography is to be believed, the early days of computing seem to have been a purely male domain. If women are ever present in the collective memory, they’re usually relegated to secondary roles. Yet, if they were there (and they were), shouldn’t we really be speaking about female re-empowerment instead? And how can these worn-out stereotypes be replaced, reconstituted or broadened? Let’s get our hands on these binary understandings of gender, and their roles, and start shaking!
Diverse & Digital: The Fe:male Digital Footprint
The 'Gender and Coding' topic is still in its infancy. In the digital economy, both binary code and executive positions are mostly in male hands. Is the prestige of men in the tech industry threatening to make digital innovations too one-sided? Do women and the non-binary think technological progress, digital entrepreneurship, app development etc. differently? We want to strengthen the position of women and the non-binary, and are therefore calling on these digital and tech industry experts to give their ideas and initiatives a stage at re:publica 2018. Because we believe: “Digital” isn’t just hard and software, it’s also a mind-set and a competence. What is needed for an individual to be successful in the digital world? What allows them to help shape the digital shift?
Our call isn’t just aimed at women, but is an open invitation to all: Dear lesbian, gay, bi, trans, inter, queer, and all other non-heteronormative identifying persons, you are all cordially invited! With 'Fe:male', we expressly aim to set an example for more inclusion and create actual, not just symbolic, open spaces for all voices to be heard.
The #rp18 topic 'Fe:male Digital Footprint' is supported by the Otto Group.

As technology and innovation progresses in all parts of the world, it needs to be ensured that women and girls are part of this transformation. There is an urgent need to create gender-inclusive technology and promote women’s participation in the design and development of digital solutions, products and services.

Sexualized images of the female body have historically served the male gaze and been exploited for profit. Today's artists and sex workers are no longer dependent on gatekeepers such as galleries and agencies. Using tools such as live-streaming and social media, they can cultivate their own brand and clients - and in some cases, develop their own platforms for distribution. What are the revolutionary possibilities and contradictions facing women selling sex on the Internet?
