Technology anthropologists, psychologists, cybersecurity researchers, historians, neurobiologists, sociologists (and, and, and) ... this track is dedicated to you and your research. Here we examine the synergies between science and technology. We ask how technological developments and innovations influence culture and society, how culture and society in turn drive digital development and innovation. We are interested in infrastructures and hardware as well as insights into logbooks from laboratories, think tanks and universities. Finally, we are looking forward to learning more about visions, new designs and innovative materials - about making and hacking.

Amongst essential technology developments Open Source Ecology Germany is focusing on small scale forms of energy autonomy. By using modular and scalable elements like the UniProKit, the SolarBox is a key project to give maximum flexibility for mobile energy solutions. Open sourcing the development and creating OER materials means this kind of technology becomes an accelerator for innovation and empowers global tech solutions and Access to Skills and Knowledge #ASK. Let's build it together!

Scared of big data? We eat this stuff for breakfast!
We will explore, interrelate and discuss the myriad layers of digital data within the world of climate change research – petabytes of raw data stored in scientific supercomputers, countless pages of online explanation, documentation and visualization, as well as seemingly endless social media threads passionately debating these explanations. We invite the re:publica crowd to a journey through today’s scientific and civic open data practices.

If we were forced to define Western civilization, we would have to address its hunger for the novel. It seems as if our culture is obsessed with pushing forward, with discovering new ways and places in which to be. This is, often, viewed as a positive thing. However, in our rush for the new, we don’t often delay on the prices those who come to occupy these next frontiers will pay. One of the prices that seem more and more actual is the price of loneliness.

Under the hood of Internet services (e-mail, WWW, social media...) exists the world of numbers, addresses, protocols. These "common resources" are governed through the consensus building processes that are also familiar to hackers and anarchists.

With the Internet's ever increasing impact on the economical, political and social aspects of our lives, learn how YOU can take part deciding the future of the the free and open Internet.

Facebook and Google suck up our personal data and turn it into fake news, engagement algorithms and “psychographic messaging” fed by Russian bots and digital stealth operatives trolling for Brexit and Donald Trump's election. A battle is looming over who will control this sea of data and artificial intelligence, with the needs of the public interest and private, Internet-based businesses often in conflict. What can be done to promote innovative policy approaches about the use of Big Data, and to develop a social economy for the digital age?

Computer vision is becoming one of the focus areas in artificial intelligence (AI) to enable computers to see and perceive like humans.
In a collaboration with the Royal Holloway University, we applied deep learning to locate small scale mines in Ghana using satellite imagery, scaled training using Kubernetes and investigated their impact on surrounding populations & environment.

People go to different doctors for different ailments. Each visit results in new health data, which if combined and cross-referenced would help health researchers to spot patterns in symptoms in order to better improve diagnostic criteria. This requires new approaches to processing, storing and visualizing personal data as well as careful ethical considerations. Machine learning and our health – how do we go forward without missing opportunities, while keeping our personal integrity intact?

We want to discuss these questions with you. Your ideas will contribute to cutting edge systems medicine research.

In the wake of digital colonisation, increasingly intricate algorithms scout for patterns in the data we generate. The ever-expanding archive not only reflects our values and society—it shapes new cultures, behaviours, and beliefs. We posit that future rituals and algorithms can be rehearsed through performing arts, and propose an intervention that is part discussion, part social experiment, and strives to explore the combined functionalities ...
