Matthias Spielkamp is founder and executive director of AlgorithmWatch, a non-profit advocacy and research organisation focusing on consequences of algorithmic decision making (ADM) on societies. He is co-founder and publisher of the online magazine iRights.info, which in 2006 received the Grimme Online Award, Germany’s most prestigious award for online journalism. He testified before several committees of the German Bundestag, i.e. on AI and robotics. Currently, Matthias is a Bucerius Fellow of ZEIT-Stiftung; in 2015/16 he was a Fellow at Stiftung Mercator. He serves on the governing board of the German section of Reporters Without Borders and the advisory councils of Stiftung Warentest and the Whistleblower Network. In the steering committee of the German Internet Governance Forum (IGF-D), he acts as co-chair for the academia and civil society stakeholder groups. Matthias has co-authored and edited several books on Internet governance, journalism and copyright regulation and holds master’s degrees in Journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Philosophy from the Free University of Berlin. He has contributed to publications like MIT Technology Review and Die Zeit and he has been quoted by Engadget, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Wired and many others. In 2017 he was named one of 15 architects building the data-driven future by Silicon Republic.
